Recognizing that the need for computer literacy does not dissipate with age, we launched our Comp2Seniors program in 2006. Since then, the program has provided valuable computer literacy training to 1,000 low income seniors, installed computers in their homes and provided ongoing helpdesk support.
Administered via a partnership with area senior centers and Older Senior Training Services (OATS), each participating senior receives ten 75-minute classes over a five week period. The training curriculum has been carefully structured to help seniors feel comfortable and capable around computers so they can feel confidant sending emails, “surfing the web” or attending to health and well-being issues from the comfort of their homes. Most importantly, Comp2Seniors' “graduates” are able to effectively maintain relationships with their families, friends and communities, effectively addressing isolation issues that are a prevalent concern for the elderly.
The Comp2Seniors program has been conducted in 14 area senior centers in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan. We hope to greatly expand this service in 2008.
The Comp2Seniors program is available in New York.
