#AGoodJobChanged Jamel’s Confidence
For Jamel, a #AGoodJobChanged his entire self-perspective and belief in the future.
After graduating from college, the only work Jamel could find was at a small restaurant in Annapolis. “It was honestly one of the worst jobs I ever had, and I was miserably depressed,” he says.
What Jamel really wanted was to work in tech, and had already taught himself a lot of the relevant skills. But without any experience or professional qualifications, Jamel couldn’t find any employer willing to take a chance on him.
Finally, Jamel decided his only option was to enlist in the military. He went down to the recruiting station, and over the next few weeks of applications and processing, prepared to uproot his life.
Then, just one day before he was scheduled to sign his papers, Jamel learned about Per Scholas.
He knew immediately that he had to attend. “As I filled out the Per Scholas application, I was literally on the verge of tears,” he says. “I knew that if I could get an answer back, I could show them that I was worth the time and effort.”
Per Scholas did more than just answer Jamel’s application: it offered him a seat in the very next class.
Jamel quickly realized he had found the right place. “The instructors were amazing, they told it like it is and held us to a very high standard. It was the whole combo of how the staff treated us, their knowledge and their willingness to help.”
Jamel continued to volunteer with Per Scholas after he graduated and looked for a job, recruiting and helping other students. Then he found his first real tech position at a local internet service provider, supporting other network technicians. “The more I got into it, the more I learned. I grew to love it,” he says.
Now Jamel has found an even better position at a major medical center in Baltimore. As a result, he says, “I was actually able to purchase my first car. I would never have been able to do that before … make the payments, feel secure.”
Summing up the entire experience, Jamel says this: “Before Per Scholas, I would wake up and sit in my bed, about to cry. Now I get out of bed and I’m ready to take on the world, because Per Scholas showed me the way.”
