Tech Powered by Moms: Tara Fuller

Tara Fuller, a Mom from Dallas, had a good job managing a program for at risk youth in a local school district, but she found herself out of work when the program lost its funding. “When I lost my job it severely impacted my family. We were unable to afford housing. It shook us.” She and her husband took jobs working 16 hours days as overnight janitors, and moved their family into her mother’s garage. Without a degree, potential employers told her she was underqualified for jobs she knew she could do.

Tara was intimidated to start the IT Support course at Per Scholas because she had never considered a career in tech and didn’t have any experience in the field, but with the support of Per Scholas staff and her family, she resolved to succeed and earned an industry-recognized certification.Today, Tara works as an IT technician, and everything has changed for her family. She was recently able to buy a house for her family, and she can focus on creating memorable and meaningful experiences for her kids. “We drove them to the Civil Liberties Museum up in Memphis for our first family vacation in a long long time. It was so powerful.”

Per Scholas Applauds Colorado Senator Michael Bennet’s Better Jobs through Evidence and Innovation Act

Per Scholas is thrilled that Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet has introduced the Better Jobs through Evidence and Innovation Act, which aims to expand funding for proven workforce development programs to provide workers with more opportunities in high-paying careers such as IT, healthcare, manufacturing, and financial services. The Act proposes the creation of the Workforce Development Innovation Fund within the U.S. Department of Labor, which will allocate funding to evidence-based training programs such as Per Scholas that have shown measurable economic benefits for job seekers and employers.

Per Scholas Joins the Military Spouse Employment Partnership through our Vets in Tech Initiative

Last year, Per Scholas joined the Defense Department Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program and Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) alongside more than 70 new partners to MSEP — bringing the number of employers to more than 700. MSEP connects military spouses with hundreds of partner employers who commit to recruiting, hiring, promoting and retaining military spouses. Per Scholas is proud to be part of the MSEP through our Vets in Tech initiative, which will enable Per Scholas to enroll at least 1,000 veterans and military spouses over 3 years.
