Daejona Jordan has always been a builder, though her tools have changed over time. With a career spanning radio board operation, voice acting, and community organizing within Detroit’s vibrant art scene, Daejona’s background is as eclectic as it is impactful. However, after a period of professional burnout and the frustration of an exhausting job search, she reached a turning point.
Inspired by her partner’s success with Per Scholas, she decided to trade the “what-ifs” for a new career path, realizing that the next three months would pass regardless—the only question was where she wanted to be when they did.
Though Daejona grew up as an early adopter of tech—troubleshooting computers and burning CDs at age nine—Per Scholas allowed her to turn that curiosity into a professional powerhouse. She thrived in the hands-on environment, specifically falling in love with hardware.
“There’s something about knowing how to build a computer and knowing what each part does in a world that is evolving so quickly,” she says. “It makes me feel like I’m evolving with it.”
Beyond the technical skills, Daejona found what she values most: community. Her classmates became a vital support system, creating a “little community within the classroom” that carried them through the rigors of earning certifications like Google IT Support and CompTIA A+.
Daejona’s hard work paid off before she even graduated. Just five or six weeks into the course, job offers and interviews began rolling in. Ultimately, she found her perfect fit right where her journey started. Today, Daejona serves as the Manager of Recruitment and Admissions at Per Scholas Detroit.
In her new role, she uses her firsthand experience to guide incoming learners. “Being a part of the class gives me the perspective to speak to how the journey goes, the work required, and the support available to make sure goals are reached.”
As a woman navigating a traditionally male-dominated field, Daejona’s message to others considering a pivot into tech is clear: Existing loudly is an act of progress.
“Don’t be intimidated. Sometimes these fields look out of reach, but you can change that landscape by simply existing in those spaces,” she advises. “We deserve to take up space. Find a community that supports and understands you—the world is truly your oyster!”
Daejona isn’t slowing down. While continuing her art career in Detroit, she plans to take the Per Scholas Business Analytics course and eventually hopes to launch a nonprofit dedicated to teaching young girls about online safety.
For Daejona, the future is about intentionality, community, and proving that with the right support, you can build a career and a life that you love.
