Raekwon Frazier graduated this year from Per Scholas NCR’s IT Support course. Before Per Scholas, he had a background in customer service and had done a semester of community college before deciding it wasn’t for him. He wasn’t entirely sure what he wanted to pursue and was just working jobs to make ends meet. “Before Per Scholas, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do,” Raekwon recalled. “I didn’t know what I wanted my career path to be…Per Scholas really defined that for me.”
One of Raekwon’s friends works in software development, and hearing about his role inspired Raekwon to look into starting a career in tech. Raekwon met a Per Scholas alumni who told him about the Per Scholas. Raekwon researched the organization and thought it seemed like a great fit — he applied right away.
Raekwon enjoyed his time at Per Scholas and the supportive environment of his cohort. “My teacher was my rock,” he recalled. “He was so great. Any time I had a question or needed help or an answer to something, he was there to help. He really made the learning entertaining…It was like a family, a very community-driven cohort. Everyone wanted to help everyone. As long as you were willing to come there every day and put in the work and time, you were going to get a lot out of it.”
Raekwon excelled in the course and graduated with his CompTIA A+ certification. He is currently enrolled in Per Scholas’ alumni CompTIA Network+ course, working to earn his Network+ certification.
The professional development team at Per Scholas was very helpful in preparing Raekwon to land his first role after graduation. “Per Scholas’ career development coach was awesome,” Raekwon reflected. “He would help us revise our resumes, work on our cover letters, work on our communication skills and LinkedIn profiles. With his help and my modified LinkedIn profile, potential recruiters started contacting me and that’s how I found my current job.” Raekwon now works as a Client Support Specialist at Employee Navigator. He is considering going back to college to learn even more about IT!
