Phillip Kinney
Per Scholas gave me a lot of confidence. I know that I would not have qualified for the role that I have now, from a technical perspective, without Per Scholas.
Coding Instructor
Generation USA

Charlotte, NC
Java Developer
Phillip was always interested in tech, but he found it extremely difficult to break into the field, despite having a Bachelor’s Degree in Management Information Systems. Besides his passion for all things tech, Phillip knew that people with tech skills were often in high demand, which would lead to greater job security, and he admired the flexibility that a remote tech job could provide.
Phillip worked in business and office management for many years, but thought often of pursuing his long-time interest in tech. He knew that he needed to up his skills in order to be a candidate for tech roles. When the Covid pandemic hit, Phillip decided to take a leap of faith and pursue his dream. He resigned from his job and enrolled in Per Scholas Charlotte’s Java Developer course.
“Per Scholas was an awesome experience,” Phillip reflected. “It felt like a safe space. The instructors did a really good job of making sure we all knew that if we needed anything we could reach out, and that just made it so much easier to take on the very, very challenging coursework.”
Phillip had full-time employment within two weeks of graduating from Per Scholas. He now works at a non-profit called Generation USA, teaching coding. “It’s so great,” he remarked. “I am able to pay forward a lot of what I received from Per Scholas and help others learn about coding. It’s really fulfilling.”
“Per Scholas gave me a lot of confidence. I know that I would not have qualified for the role that I have now, from a technical perspective, without Per Scholas, and I know that I would not have had the confidence or interviewing skills that I know helped me get this role without the upskilling, practice, and the practical things we did at Per Scholas. I used a lot of the things I learned and did at Per Scholas to help me get this job – it made a huge impact,” Phillip reflected. “Going forward, I know I have a lot more confidence as a result of the things I learned.”
