Soma Majumder is a 2021 graduate of Per Scholas New York’s IT Support course. Prior to Per Scholas, Soma worked in a variety of fields, including health management, business, marketing, and public relations. When the Covid-19 pandemic started, Soma found herself looking for work, and decided to try something new.
She had been interested in tech since she was young, and over the years had constantly looked for ways to improve her computer skills.
With this in mind, Soma began searching for IT programs, and soon came across Per Scholas. “I saw that they were literally teaching people the nitty gritty of technology and computers,” Soma recalled. “I just applied and hoped for the best. I got in, and the rest is history!
Soma was accepted into Per Scholas New York’s IT Support course. She found the program very interesting and was not overwhelmed because she loves to learn.
“[The teachers] were very instrumental in keeping me excited about the IT field because they gave us all the resources I could ever need and more,” Soma reflected. “The people, the teachers, the written material, guides, even a computer that I needed…it was really a great experience being in Per Scholas, and I would recommend it to anybody because they really made you feel like you could succeed, and they supported that with everything.”
Soma worked closely with her career coach and the business solutions team at Per Scholas to help her land a job after graduating. She currently works as an IT Support Help Desk Technician for the NYC Department of Education, and is continuing her education to become a Full Stack Web Developer and Software Engineer through a Pursuit Fellowship.
“I definitely think I will be going forward in the IT field because it’s so interesting and there are so many branches you can go into; there’s always something to learn,” Soma said. “If you are thinking of applying to Per Scholas, you should definitely do it! It will change your life and give you the foundation of an IT education…[IT] is such a vast and evolving field; there is so much opportunity and the sky is the limit.”

What I think makes up a well-rounded employee is both soft skills and technical skills, and I think Per Scholas has really developed a great way to round those out.
