Diverse by Design: The Future of Work with EY

On September 27, 2022, leaders from Per Scholas and EY hosted a discussion, “Diverse by Design: The Future of Work,” to explore how organizations can source and train people with high potential and desire to work in technology.

“We create opportunities for people who can build amazing IT careers,” said Plinio Ayala, Per Scholas CEO and president. “Corporations must fight this fight with us. There should be no paper ceiling. If you have the skills and can get the job, you should get the job.”

Per Scholas Diverse by Design Chicago Event

Per Scholas Diverse by Design hosted a profound diversity event in Chicago in the summer of 2023.  Check out this video of the full event featuring a keynote discussion with Nikki Lanier, Founder and CEO of Harper Slade, featured the documentary The Road Up and a discussion led by Co-Director Greg Jacobs, and held two-panel discussions about DEI&B efforts regarding diverse talent.

On January 25, 2022, we were proud to host Diverse by Design Greater Boston! Mosaic, Not Melting Pot: Fostering True Belonging in the Workplace featured a panel of Greater Boston diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) leaders and interactive networking to explore what true belonging looks like and the relationship between belonging and workforce retention.

Young, Black, and Techy: Recruiting, Retaining, and Cultivating Diverse Talent

Per Scholas celebrated Black History Month on Tuesday, February 23 with Diverse by Design’s first 2021 Virtual Conversation, Young, Black & Techy: Recruiting, Retaining, and Cultivating Diverse Talent. The one-hour webinar identified barriers young Black candidates face when trying to enter tech roles, and the strategies Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) executives are using to mitigate those barriers.

Designing Pathways for the New Worker

This event session examined internal business pathways designed for the “new worker.” In this case, ‘new worker’ doesn’t refer necessarily to a younger worker, but to a worker trained to succeed in today’s high-tech environment.  This means that today’s workers need to develop new skills or update old ones at every step of their career in order to keep their skills relevant.

Detroit 2019 Event

To kick the event off with a bang TEKsystems President, Jay Alvather, and Per Scholas President & CEO, Plinio Ayala proudly announced the launch of a talent transformation partnership to train more than 540 people for cutting-edge jobs in Detroit, Philadelphia, and Boston. This joint effort to create a more diverse talent pipeline for emerging U.S. tech hubs is directly linked to Diverse by Design’s vision of equity at the forefront, as regional and national economies develop.

On Wednesday, October 24, 2018, Per Scholas and the Information Technology Senior Management Forum(ITSMF) hosted Diverse by Design Dallas, the sixth in a conversation series about building diversity and inclusion in the workforce.

Over 100 leaders representing organizations across the tech, finance and nonprofit sectors gathered at the home of Per Scholas’ Dallas training site to promote diversity in the workplace. Speakers and panelists shared best practices in uncovering unconscious biases and tactics for C-suite leaders to identify, coach, and retain diverse talent across all levels of their organizations.

Kansas City 2017 Event

Per Scholas and the Information Technology Senior Management Forum (ITSMF) hosted the third Diverse by Design conversation series on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Annual Conference in Kansas City, Missouri.

The NSBE Conference, focused on “increasing the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community” provided an energetic and inspiring backdrop for the event. Nearly 150 participants including business and community leaders, teachers, college students, engineers, and workforce development advocates joined the engaging and frank conversation about building diversity and inclusion in the workforce.

Washington, D.C. 2016 Event

Per Scholas and the Information Technology Senior Management Forum (ITSMF) hosted the second Diverse by Design on Tuesday, December 13, 2016, in the nation’s capital.

The event was hosted at Google and brought together nearly 150 c-suite executives, employer partners, public servants, and leaders from the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors to discuss the role and impact of public-private partnerships in building an inclusive and diverse tech workforce. Damien Howard, VP of Social Ventures at Per Scholas opened the afternoon by highlighting the need for crosscutting collaborative solutions to drive progress toward creating a truly representative tech workforce.

New York 2016 Event

On Tuesday, June 21, 2016, Per Scholas and the Information Technology Senior Management Forum (ITSMF) hosted Diverse by Design, the first in a conversation series about building diversity and inclusion in the workforce.

Nearly 200 guests comprising of C-Suite individuals, employer partners, and representatives from workforce development convened at Google’s New York City Headquarters to hear from Fortune 500 thought leaders in technology, finance, energy, and social impact.
